The First Day
Where did life originate? This is an experiment with light, fog, and water. There might be worlds of bacteria and microbes contained within.

Their topography is extraordinary.

Every flower, tree, or leaf has its own personality. Sometimes I find it thrilling and often moving to focus on the individual.

I am not one to anthropomorphize the natural world, however, sometimes a tree is a she.

I’ve created a new category for links of interest. I’ll be continually adding and sorting. I hope you’ll check them out.
I recently renewed my acquaintance with a photographer I’ve always admired. Joanna Totolici worked in Pittsburgh for years carving out a niche as the go to fashion photographer. She eventually moved to New York, where she has worked hard at establishing her name and unique vision. You can check out her work here, or from the link to the right.
Nine Mile Run is a six acre protected watershed in Pittsburgh’s east end. It has become a preferred destination for bikers, runners, and dog walkers. While the stream is still often malodorous and debris-strewn due to sewage run-off (especially after heavy rains), a problem that has plagued the stream for almost a century, efforts at reclaiming this stretch of land and water are proving successful. Some of the beautiful flora and fauna can be seen here. For more information on the restoration project, check out the main site here.

Part of the fire spinning series. Sometimes I discover a flaw isn’t a flaw after all.

In 2006, I was lucky enough to contribute the cover photograph for Michael Simms’ new poetry book, The Happiness of Animals. The following year, I did the same for Stories About Time, an anthology of poems dedicated to local Pittsburgh poet Michael Wurster. Michael Simms has generously asked me to design the cover for his next book as well, titled Black Stone. I am really pleased by how the cover is shaping up. Once I get the approval from Michael and the editor/publisher, I’ll share it here.
